Roof Underlayment in Florida: Synthetic vs. Felt

Underlayment is the layer that keeps water out when the covering is compromised. In Florida that role is not theoretical.

Felt

Traditional asphalt-saturated felt. Inexpensive, but it tears more easily, absorbs water and degrades faster under Florida heat.

Synthetic

Stronger, lighter, more tear resistant, and far more stable under UV exposure during installation. It is the standard on quality Florida re-roofs.

Self-adhered

Peel-and-stick membranes seal around fasteners and can serve as the secondary water barrier where required. This is the layer that matters most on tile roofs, where it is typically what fails first.
