Hail damage is the most commonly missed roof damage because it frequently does not leak. It removes granules, bruises the shingle mat and dents soft metals, which shortens the roof's remaining life without producing an obvious symptom.

What we look for

• Granule loss exposing the mat, and granules accumulating in gutters
• Bruising you can feel but not always see on the shingle surface
• Dents in soft metals — vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts
• Cracked or spalled tile
• Impact marks on skylight frames and HVAC fins

Timing matters

Carriers apply deadlines for reporting storm damage, and attributing hail damage to a specific event gets harder as time passes. Documented inspection soon after a hail event protects your position.
